CHI Summer Internship Student Spotlight: Spencer Czech

Internship Placement: Ramsey County Children’s Mental Health Collaborative

What are you working on this summer?

I have been invested in developing healing circles for queer and trans (also known as LGBTQIA) youth and care givers of queer and trans youth. I will be leading two healing circles: one for queer and trans youth and one for their caregivers. Additionally, I have been curating culturally humble resources (e.g. mental health providers, primary care doctors, affirming employers, basic needs resources, etc.) for RCCMHC to provide to queer and trans youth and their caregivers as well as a resource list on the community e-bulletin board. Lastly, I provide resource navigation and basic case management services to queer and trans youth and/or their caregivers.

What has been the most impactful part of your internship experience so far?

The most impactful experience of my internship is a direct result of the CHI funding: having financial resources to attend to my own needs in order to show up as the best version of myself for youth and their families at RCCMHC. Without funding from the CHI program, I would not have had the opportunity to intern as such an incredible organization and with staff who value culturally humble and equity-based initiatives.

What are you most looking forward to for the rest of the summer?

I am most looking forward to getting to a beach or two to go swimming!
